The user interface is sharper, the comments system is a great feature. However, there is just "something" missing - the immediacy of Twitter? Perhaps that will change with more experience of Jaiku.
I am certainly not writing Jaiku off - it has been an enjoyable experience so far. However, the news flow is one of the best bits about Twitter. That said, if Twitter cannot master its scaling issues the news flow will fail anyway.
sconsult, Twitter will master the scaling issues. They have the funding and bright technical folks. They're just suffering now because they initially chose an inappropriate application architecture. But, they will solve it.
beng, but if someone doesn't subscribe to my Jaiku feed, do they see in their feed when I @ username them (like in Twitter), or do they only see it when they add me as a contact?
@sconsult I prefer Jaiku for usability and interface, but I prefer twitter for sheer traffic. I love Jaiku. I put up with twitter. Does that make sense?
Well, given that Jaiku was around first, if I recall correctly, it may be the other way around. Jaiku can be for microblogging, lifestreaming. and social networking. Use it how you wish.
@beng Yes that does make sense. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
@smurph Jaiku was around long before FriendFeed - rather ironically at the time Jaiku was created the creators of FF would have been working for Google.
every time i come to jaiku, i think, wow, why don't i spend more time here? then i scurry back to twitter where it's busy, where i'm connected to a more comprehensive list of my friends, where it's frustrating and buggy. sigh.
@smurph, yes, cronologically FriendFeed is in competition with Jaiku. But, with Robert Scoble pushing FriendFeed, Jaiku is currently falling so far behind it's not even funny.
Scoble has been pushing FF very hard and in the process has managed to pull in a large number of the high-profile active Twitter users. On the other hand I have seen several comments from SF-based tech-savvy users that FF = info overload if you follow more than 10 people or so.
That just means those who follow Scoble will head there. There are a lot of people on Jaiku who aren't interested (and deliberately avoid) those they think of as the US tech A-list. And a lot of people whose network is with non-English speakers.
i have tried to like FF but totally overwhelmed. can you selectively follow only certain feeds? i'd rather not see every single digg, for one thing. that makes the feed unusable with lots of Digg friends (which i have)
And it's very hard to have a long, multi-party conversation like this on Twitter. People can join in hours later, and their comments are still in context. That is the joy of Jaiku. But if you just want to microblog your status you can (with icons even!). In the end though, it's social networking, and community is everything.
Selective following of feeds is a nice thing about Jaiku: if you want, you can follow my Jaikus only, or perhaps my flickr feed, etc, but turn off my twitters and pownces and tumblrs etc (which could be annoying as I often cross-post).
cross posting is WAY too easy these days, i've done it. a lot. esp. with twhirl, which i had posting to three places, two of which fed each other. ugh. i'd like to think people who follow me have the choice to switch me off if i forget & crossfeed again :)
sigh Jaiku has been around probably as long as twitter. It was originally conceived, along with it's mobile app, as an app that would allow you to see where your contacts are in relation to you, using the phone's inbuilt GPS. Then someone got the bright idea of "Hey, what about showing what they are doing as well?", and then, threads are obvious, because sometimes you just want to talk to someone...then there's the whole lifestreaming aspect mentioned somewhere above (just woke up, can barely form coherent sentences), allowing you to even comment on all those items, and unsubscribe easily from them, and that's it. Twitter meanwhile (as they themselves have described themselves) is presence update. You say "I just saw a monkey walk down the street". The @ reply is a nice addon, but not necessarily part of the twitter experience, considering I follow a guy called the php jedi and he hardly replies. If you want to track the @ replies, you can try installing Jaikungfu on Firefox. See this screenshot, the upper right. And I feel like I've rambled on...but I've at least told you of one tool....oh! Another great tool is tracku which is the bot that does the tracking of terms and locations. And now I'm rambling incoherently goes back to sleep
@edythemighty Thank you, I will check out those tools.
@smurph, @dotlizard, The first thing I did when I opened my Jaiku account was feed my Twitter stream in. Then I thought, "Wait a second, now my Twitter stream is going to go into FriendFeed twice. Once from Twitter and a second time from Jaiku." It's kinda hard sometimes to remember where one is feeding in what nowadays..
I like the Jaiku idea that one can selectively follow friend content.

First off, it's not the same. That much should be made clear. As for better or worse, that's entirely subject to your opinion of it.

Jaiku is just as "immediate" as Twitter, but the user base is a bit different at the moment, so we don't seem to get the same news flow.

beng, how would you describe the current user base (apart from relatively small)?
1 year, 5 months ago by dewaldp
One HUGE feature of Twitter that I immediately notice is missing on Jaiku, is the @ replies that can put you in touch with anybody.
1 year, 5 months ago by dewaldp
@dewaldp you can @ on Jaiku :)

And I'd describe the userbase as relatively small, and possibly more person-to-person than "broadcasty" as Twitter is.

@beng I see that you are on Twitter as well - which one do you prefer when they are both working correctly?
1 year, 5 months ago by sconsult
@dewaldp That would be my guess at the moment too - they have huge first mover advantage at the moment - http://siteanalytics.compete.com/twitter.com+pownce.com+jaiku.com+friendfeed.com/?metric=uv

I just asked that question over on #jaiku: http://jaiku.com/channel/jaiku/presence/35996673

To me, being brand-new to Jaiku, it looks as if Jaiku is more in competition with FriendFeed than with Twitter.

Looking at my FriendFeed stream, these comments don't feed into FriendFeed, only the Jaikus do. That's a real pity.
1 year, 5 months ago by dewaldp
@sconsult Info overload is one of my biggest gripes about FriendFeed.
1 year, 5 months ago by dewaldp
@smurph That's true, but what Scoble does is give FriendFeed viral momentum. It's very hard to play catch-up on that.
